Welcome to Holyhead - Walking Tour

All event fees are listed net of VAT.

Join the North Wales Hub for a walking tour of Holyhead, exploring the town’s recent cultural and heritage driven transformation!

Part-funded by UK government and National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Holyhead Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) has supported the repair, re-use and reinstatement of numerous historic buildings within the town centre conservation area.  The latest phase, which completes this spring, forms part of a long running programme of investment designed to improve the town centre, attract more visitors and encourage further private investment in the area.

Holyhead has a unique and special character and its built environment makes a significant contribution to this.  The town developed as a result of its strategic position on the crossing to Ireland and the Victorian character of its town centre dates from the boom years of 19th century.  Holyhead still remains an important ferry terminal and railway link, connecting the UK and Ireland.

The walking tour will be led by Aimee McKenzie and Chloe Sheward, project architects at Donald Insall Associates, who have helped deliver a number of the heritage-led regeneration projects around the town.  Both Aimee and Chloe are passionate about conservation-led regeneration; providing historic assets with a sustainable future whilst creating high quality spaces that benefit inhabitants, communities and the environment.

Attendees should arrive at Holyhead Market Hall at 10am.  We will be given a tour of the Market Hall and an insight into the project itself which will be followed by a walk through the town focusing on areas which benefitted from the THI such as historic shopfronts, public houses and the chapel of Eglwys y Bedd and St Cybi’s Church.  The tour will end back at the Market Hall with an opportunity for informal networking over coffee and cake.

Members and non-members of all genders are welcome to attend.
