A Peek at the Peaks - a beautiful evening walk

All event fees are listed net of VAT.

Join the Yorkshire & North East branch to get away from your desk and enjoy a beautiful evening walk exploring the quieter end of The Great Ridge from Castleton, looking towards Mam Tor with views of the Hope and Edale.

This walk takes place in an iconic location of the Dark Peak with around 5 miles of breath-taking scenery. The walk starts in the village of Castleton and ascends onto The Great Ridge via Hollins Cross. Then we head up to Back Tor where we will have magnificent views of the ridge and the valleys either side. Next we have another gentle climb to our highest point - Lose Hill. Here, we can sit for a while and just enjoy the panoramic views before heading back down into Castleton before dark. There are plenty of pubs for us to rest afterwards!

Distance: 5 miles/8km

Level: Moderate - mostly paths and trails but there is some steep and uneven ground that may be slippery following rainfall.

Elevation: 900 ft

Time: 2.5-3.5 hours

Who will be your guide?

Emily, founder of Peak Outdoor Coaching. "I’m a Hill and Moorland Leader based in Glossop at the edge of the Dark Peak. I’ve always been outdoorsy since being a young girl but hiking became a real obsession in 2019 when I started to go solo. I aim to inspire others to learn the many benefits of exploring in the outdoors and I’m passionate about sharing my love for adventure with you!"

Terrain:

Mostly trails and footpaths, with some short, steeper sections. There are stiles on this walk. Always be prepared for mud in the Peaks!

Toilets:

There are toilets at the car park, which close at 5pm. There are none along the way on the walk so we may have to embrace the good old ‘wild wees’ whilst we’re out! We will be heading to a pub afterwards where we can use toilets on our return.

Safety:

The whole point of the walk is to be enjoyable and memorable experiences for everyone so we will keep to a slow and steady pace. It's about taking in the views, learning about the history and geology of the area and being in nature, not about rushing to the finish line. Having said that, you are responsible for your own health and safety and with all outdoor activities, there can be risks involved. If you are unsure as to whether you are fit to come on this walk, please either consult your doctor or let us know your concerns. Please inform us of any medical conditions prior to the walk. Every participant MUST complete a medical disclaimer form a minimum of 24 hours before the event begins.

Dogs:

Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome to come along, but they will need to be kept on a short lead for the majority of the walk. There are also stiles on this route.

We’ll be meeting at the visitor centre car park in Castleton to take advantage of the public loos (which close at 17:00). It costs £4.50 to park.

This is a member-only event.
