Back by popular demand, we’re travelling back in time to explore the Roman Villa and the museum at The Newt.
The Roman Villa experience is made up of two parts, sitting side by side on The Newt estate.
First, the Roman Villa museum: carefully constructed over the original archaeological remains, allowing visitors to walk above and around the foundations of the Romano-British villa exactly where they were discovered.
Second: a traditionally designed and constructed full-scale replica of the villa, built within the excavation site itself, bringing daily Roman life into three dimensions just a few steps away.
In June 2022, following a seven-year programme of excavation, research, preservation and reconstruction, the Roman Villa Museum was unveiled. Behind this extraordinary undertaking was architect Nicola du Pisanie of Stonewood Design, tasked with the small challenge of honouring 4th-century archaeology using techniques deeply respectful of the past.
Nicola will be joined by Keith Johnson of Stantec, the engineers of ‘the floating museum’ and together they’ll guide us behind the scenes through the thinking, craftsmanship and inevitable challenges of translating 351AD into a modern visitor experience. All while staying true to the original site, materials and intent.
We’ll begin with coffee and The Newt’s famously good cinnamon buns to fuel our 20 minute walk to The Roman Villa and the museum. Sensible shoes and weather-appropriate layers recommended.
You’re very welcome to stay on at The Newt afterwards… if you can get it past work!
Please park in the visitor car park. Parking is free. If you require accessible parking or transport, please let us know in advance and we’ll arrange private transport.
Members and non-members of all genders are welcome to attend.
