Join author and historian Carol Harris for a social history walking tour in Bloomsbury. Worldwide, women’s campaign for the vote was the political issue of the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the UK, women who fought the law to qualify as doctors were in the thick of it and Bloomsbury was their base. On this walk we will visit the places where these women lived, worked and are commemorated.
Landmarks include the first medical school for women in England, the site of the Minerva Club where Dr Elizabeth Knight offered like-minded women a place to stay, organise and discuss the campaign for the vote, and Tavistock Square where some of these pioneering women are celebrated.
Meeting outside Unison Building (130 Euston Road), the walk will take about 90 minutes and will end in Endell Street, Covent Garden. We will then adjourn to a local bar where you will have the chance to network with Women in Property members and their guests, and to quiz Carol further about Bloomsbury, over refreshments.
