The Ancoats Dispensary was built in 1874 to support the Royal Infirmary in meeting growing demands for healthcare from across Manchester. It is one of the city’s ‘most cherished’ Victorian landmarks, yet stood empty and crumbling for more than 30 years.
Buttress Architects, on behalf of Great Places Housing Association, achieved planning permission to transform the building into 39 homes for social rent. The plans, delivered in partnership with Manchester City Council, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), Homes England and Contractors Eric Wright, will look to preserve as much of the original Grade II-listed façade as possible.
The tour will focus on the considerations in undertaking a listed building façade retention.
Meet at Buttress Studio, 41 Bengal Street for a short presentation, coffee and pastries before the site visit.
Full PPE (hear hat, hi-vis and steel toe cap site boots) is required for this event. You will need to bring your own.
