Women of Sheffield – General Cemetery History Tour

All event fees are listed net of VAT.

Join us for a thought-provoking guided tour exploring the lives of women, both wealthy and working class, connected to Sheffield General Cemetery. This walking tour uncovers the often overlooked stories of the women who shaped the city’s history.

Opened in 1836 and with the last burial in 1978, Sheffield General Cemetery lay abandoned and overgrown for many years, but has been carefully restored over three decades and is now preserved as a valuable green space in the heart of the city.

The event is led by volunteers of the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust (SGCT).

Following the tour there will be the opportunity for networking and to purchase light refreshments (via donation to the SGCT) at the Samuel Worth Chapel.

The historic nature of the site and the sloping landscape mean that not all spaces are fully accessible. Paths may be uneven and there are steps on some paths. Sturdy shoes and a waterproof in case of wet weather are advised.

There are regular buses from the city centre to Ecclesall Road, which is a short walk from the Gatehouse entrance. Car parking is available on adjacent streets off Cemetery Avenue and near to the Montague Street entrance. Parking is limited, and restrictions may apply.

Members and Non-Members of all genders are welcome.
