“Why would I go to the park? There’s nothing there for me.”
Lily – age 14.
And the data suggests that Lily is right: our parks are great for younger children, but once they get older, all the standard teen provision (skate parks, MUGAs and BMX track) are dominated by boys and young men, and girls are effectively designed out.
Make Space for Girls is a charity that is working to change this. It isn’t about painting things pink or signs saying “no boys allowed”. It is about recognising the benefits that green spaces have for all our teenagers and thinking about these spaces differently. It’s about understanding the role that gender plays in how teenagers engage with parks and similar spaces; and it’s about designing spaces that work better for girls, non-binary young people, and the boys for whom the current provision doesn’t work.
Make Space for Girls will talk about the research and data that underpins their work; the reasons why change is needed and will benefit everyone; and look at examples of what better could look like.
Members and non-members of all genders are welcome to attend.
Please note: The attendance fee for this event attracts VAT (listed prices are inclusive of VAT).
