Women in Property South West is delighted to invite you to an evening with Dr Edson Burton MBE, speaking on The Colonial Legacy of Bristol’s Landscape.
Dr Edson Burton MBE presents an illustrated talk highlighting key sites in Bristol and their relationship to the Bristol slave trade. Britain's sugar colonies were sites of immense wealth generation but the producers of that wealth, enslaved Africans, did not see a scintilla of those profits instead these were ploughed into the pockets of an elite sugar industry class, who in turn invested their wealth into private and civic buildings that still exist today.
Dr. Edson Burton MBE is a writer, historian, curator, and performer, and was awarded an MBE in 2023 in recognition of his significant contributions to the arts and the community in Bristol.
This thought-provoking event offers an opportunity to reflect on how the legacy of the slave trade continues to be written into the city’s streets and architecture.
Guests will have the opportunity to network before and after the talk, and a complimentary drink will be provided.
Members and Non-Members of all genders are welcome to attend.
