History Walk – Irene Barclay and the Pioneers of Somers Town

All event fees are listed net of VAT.

Join members of the South East for a walking tour with author and historian Carol Harris which will explore the history of Irene Barclay (nee Martin), the first woman to qualify as a chartered surveyor, and other pioneers in Somers Town. Irene holds a place in history as a pioneer in social housing.  She surveyed and advised on a range of projects in London and Edinburgh. She also sat on committees, wrote extensively and broadcast, influencing generations of architects and planners.

Meet at 5.50pm in readiness for a 6pm departure. We will walk for approximately 90 minutes before adjourning to a local hostelry for some refreshments and the chance to ask Carol more about Irene.

This walk explores the history of social housing in the Somers Town area of London from the inter-war years to the present day. Led by Irene Barclay, the first woman to qualify as a chartered surveyor, and Father Basil Jellicoe, a local priest, the St Pancras House Improvement Society Ltd. built hundreds of affordable, high quality homes for local residents.

We'll visit the housing developments commissioned by the society, listed buildings managed by Barclay and her team, and see modern, award-winning amenities which perpetuate the Society's principle that 'Housing is where people live, community is where they thrive.'

Members and non-members of all genders welcome.
