Heritage-led Regeneration – High Streets Heritage Action Zones
The High Streets Heritage Action Zones programme (HSHAZ) is a £95 million government-funded initiative led by Historic England, designed to unlock the potential of high streets across England, fueling economic, social and cultural recovery, encouraging people to say Hi! to the high street, and breathing new life into it for future generations.
There are 67 HSHAZs across England, with 12 in the London and South East Region, all being delivered by lead partners (mostly Local Authorities). The programme has entered its final six months and will complete on 31 March 2024.
Join our South East Branch to hear from Alma Howell and Alice Brockway, both inspectors of Historic Buildings and Areas, about 2 HSHAZs in Hastings and Chatham. Hastings is a community-led scheme transforming the redundant Hastings Observer building through a mix of community, commercial and cultural use. Chatham, led by Medway Council, is a scheme aimed at revitalising a stretch of neglected high street containing some fascinating and highly significant buildings including one of the few Grade II listed synagogues in England. Alma, Alice and colleagues will reflect on the successes of the schemes, the importance of effective partnerships to achieve sustainable change, and how the lessons of this work with high streets could be developed and applied elsewhere in years to come.
Weather permitting there will be a rooftop tour at 10am after the presentation to talk about the evolution of London’s historic skyline.
Members and Non-members of all genders are welcome.
