Custom House Building Tour

All event fees are listed net of VAT.

Join Women in Property for an exclusive tour of the Grade 1 listed Custom House building.

There have been Custom House buildings in the Pool of London since the 13th Century. The most recent is a landmark building situated on the north bank of the Thames, opposite HMS Belfast and located between the Tower of London and Old Billingsgate Market, which was originally built in 1817. It was the HMRC headquarters until their recent move to Stratford, so closed to the public, but having been recently bought by Jastar Capital, who propose to convert it into a hotel, the building can be viewed for the first time.

Highlights include:

  • The Quayside – over an acre of open space on the riverside, where goods arrived
  • The King’s Warehouse – where goods were inspected on arrival into London
  • The Long Room – one of the most impressive rooms in London where taxes and duties were paid
  • The Robing Room – a galleried space where tax inspectors changed
  • The Tidewaiters Room – where inspectors waited for tides to be ready to go out to arriving ships
  • The West Wing – a well preserved Georgian office wing
  • The Basement – brick vaults under the West Wing, a riot training room and secure customs rooms
  • The Cells – a modern custody suite for holding and interviewing smugglers

The tour will last about one hour and afterwards there will be the opportunity to network over hot drinks until 10.30am.
