The effects of suicide in Scotland cannot be overstated. For many, suicide is seen as the most extreme form of despair and anguish, with devastating consequences for those left behind. Each year, hundreds of people in Scotland die by suicide, while thousands attempt to end their life - leaving family and friends to cope with the aftermath.
The impact of suicide is felt across all sectors of society. It can have a profound effect on the mental health and wellbeing of family, friends, workplaces and communities. The impact of suicide is far-reaching and wide-ranging, and the consequences are heart-breaking.
Kirsty Ritchie and Louise Scott, both psychotherapists from West Lothian-based firm Mind & Mission, have designed a suicide prevention programme to increase awareness of suicide in Scotland.
They both stress that “Suicide is a difficult subject to talk about and it is important that everyone is empowered with the right resources and information to speak openly and confidently about it. Our goal is to eliminate the stigma surrounding suicide and this programme has been designed to equip all individuals over 18 with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively support someone experiencing suicidal thoughts.”
