Women in Property South West branch were delighted to host an event in conjunction with the Bristol Property Agents’ Association on the development plans for the new Ashton Gate sporting quarter in Bristol. Over 70 guests joined to hear Rachael Sherratt of JLL, and Chairman of Women in Property South West, interview Martin Griffiths, Chairman of Ashton Gate. Martin shared a presentation highlighting the key elements of the ambitious plans which are the next phase of the Ashton Gate stadium development, with an anticipated cost of £180 million.
The Ashton Gate team are clearly cementing ambition to put Bristol firmly on the sporting map with the latest plans which include an iconic 4,000-seater home for the Bristol Flyers Basketball team, a 4-star hotel, 140 homes and 30,000sqft of office space as well as a multi-storey car park and significant public realm improvements. The scheme is still in initial stages, with Martin highlighting the desire to create places that will engage visitors and the local community alike, whilst also balancing a key need for 365-day a year income – something which is hard for a stadium or arena to do by itself. As well as opening up the existing Colliters Brook which will inevitably have ecological benefit to the area, they are reviewing the use of green facades and engaging with users to establish how best to deliver a sustainable travel plan that will actually work. With the site so close to the edge of Bristol – and with the neighbouring North Somerset not being in the West of England Combined Authority, this will likely be a long-term plan.
The next stage for the project team is the submission of the planning application – one which to add another layer of complexity is linked to the Longmoor residential development on green-belt land. In a city where planning applications, especially those with residential and taller buildings, can be difficult as it is, it is certainly an added hurdle to overcome. However the scale of ambition and drive is clear within the team and we look forward to hearing updates on how this progresses through 2021 as it is clear they are determined to engage, listen and deliver.
