The Grange University Hospital Site Visit was a great success joining both Women in Property members from the South West and Wales. Victoria Head from Gleeds and Mike Lewis from Laing O’Rourke presented the challenges and scrutiny the project has had to overcome which has resulted in a 16 year programme which will see the critical care hospital go live early in 2021. As the £350m project is one of the largest Welsh Government funded project and Laing O’Rourke, Gleeds and the Design Team integrated DfMA (Design for Manufacturing Assembly) in to the design from the start. It was clear that the process and buildability had been carefully considered to not only provide the programme savings but also address the local (and industry) skills shortage by providing units that can easily be assembled on site but also mitigate the need for a heavy, highly, skilled workforce. The sun was shining in Wales for the walk round site and it was impressive to see the scale of the building and the DfMA product for ourselves. Having seen the statistics for the time savings on the programme a companies by low skilled workforce The Grange University Hospital is a great example of where the future of construction is heading.
