The Association of Women in Property

Careers Fair, 26th November 2009

Careers Fair at Lilian Baylis Technology School, Lambeth

26th November 2009, 5pm onwards

The evening was organised by the school for the benefit of their year 9, 10 and 11 students and their parents as well as some college students associated with the school. There were a mixture of employers, further education colleges, universities and teachers from the school providing a wide range of future development advice to the students.

It was attended by Sarah Hopkins (E A Shaw) and Danielle Spiers (Cushman & Wakefield). Danielle was particularly keen to speak to the students as she has benefited from the Cushman & Wakefield trainee surveyor programme run in partnership with Lambeth College; a college many of the Lilian Baylis students will attend in the future.

WIP were alongside some engineering companies, law firms and IT companies such as E-on, Pinsent Masons and IBM.

The students showed admirable ambition. Many are already expressing interest in professions such as lawyers, engineers, 'builders' and 'business people'. We challenged them on these and handed out the WIP "Jobs for Girls" brochure which outlines a variety of potential career options available in the property and construction industry. In particular some of the students who expressed interest in law, were intrigued to see some of the similar alternatives available within property and construction.  Parents too seemed particularly taken with the idea of a career in property!

A lot of questions were asked, inevitably primarily around money but also potential work experience; they recognise the importance of this even at such an early stage in their career development.

We left feeling that we had an impact on some of their thoughts and at least opened the possibilities for them. We are looking forward to meeting some of these students at the O2 Roadshow on the 13th January 2010 where it will be possible to expand on some of the information given and give them a true insight into the industry.

We are still looking for volunteers and sponsors for the O2 Roadshow. Follow the link below to get more information or contact Sarah Hopkins at sh@eashaw.com
