The Mither Kirk Project
1st June 2011 at the Kirk of St Nicholas,
Aberdeen
As phase 1 of the restoration completes, Arthur Winfield,
Project leader and Colin Sutherland, Project Manager took us
through the fascinating history of the Kirk and outlined the aims
of this amazing project being undertaken by the OpenSpace
Trust.
The tour started in the East Kirk which was nothing more than a
shell following completion of an extensive archaeological dig over
recent years. The dig uncovered many secrets on the history
of this fascinating building including over 2000 skeletons,
evidence of which still protruded from the walls during our
visit!
We were then treated to a tour of St Marys Chapel which sadly is
fighting a war with dry rot before being given the opportunity to
view the newly restored lead roof for those brave enough!
Once complete, the facility will provide a wide range of rooms
for community use including a social enterprise mall, a
café, a life skill kitchen, a health and wellbeing centre
having consulting and counselling rooms, a fitness studio and group
therapy room, a 50-seat meeting room and office/meeting
accommodation.
